CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The next morning, Lola strolled through the park, the warmth of the morning sun kissing her cheeks. She carried a brown bag of steaming breakfast sandwiches in her hands. She spotted Cristina, Andie, and Lucy sitting on a cozy picnic blanket, chatting and laughing. Good, she thought, everyone made it.

Lola settled onto the picnic blanket, distributing the breakfast sandwiches to her friends. “Here's a classic bacon, egg, and cheese for you, Cristina,” Lola said.

"Breakfast of champions," Cristina beamed, her violet eyes widening.

Lola then turned to Andie, “And for you, I got you a special veggie delight with avocado, spinach, and a hint of hot sauce.”

"Word." Andie quipped.

“And, Lucy, I thought you might enjoy a hearty sausage, egg, and tomato combo," Lola sing-songed.

"This is why you're my favorite," Lucy remarked, straight-faced. Cristina and Andie rolled their eyes as they unwrapped their breakfast.

“So, how’s everyone doing?” Lola sighed. “I tossed and turned all night. That interview with Damian got to me. I can't shake the feeling that there's more to the story.”

“Same here. It doesn't add up. I mean, we saw him break down on camera, but something about it felt off the more I think about it," Lucy admitted.

Cristina said, “I didn’t sleep well either, but it’s not because of Damian.” She took a bite of her sandwich and then said, “I’m worried about the situation in general. It's like there's a puzzle, and we only have a few scattered pieces.”

“You still think he’s innocent, don’t you?” Lola questioned her, taking a bite of her own sandwich.

Cristina bobbed her head from side to side. “Eh, I can't say I don't. His tears were genuine. No doubt about it in my mind.”

“Agreed,” Andie said with her mouth full.

“I kept replaying the interview in my mind. Damian's reactions seemed rehearsed,” Lucy said.

Lola's eyes wandered as the girls' voices faded in the background. She gazed at nothing, staring through everything. The phone calls from Rick the previous night crept into her thoughts, clouding her mind. What did he know?

Lucy turned to Lola, concern etched on her face. “Lola, are you okay? Where'd ya go?”

Lola took a deep breath. “Rick called and texted me yesterday.”

"Whoa, that's heavy," Andie said between chewed food.

"So what'd you do? Did you talk to him," Cristina asked.

"I called Marco," Lola replied, picking at the grass. "I-I haven't responded to Rick."

"What did the text say?" Lucy asked, jutting her chin toward Lola's phone.

"'You are in danger. We need to talk,'" Lola answered.

"Whoa, double heavy," Andie gaped at her.

"You told Marco, right?" Lucy asked.

"Yes, of course. I highly suggest not keeping secrets from your fiancé," Lola advised, tossing the grass aside.

"Duh, before-you-get-married-101," Cristina snickered.

"Okay, well, as much as I'd love to continue the ex-boyfriend dos and don'ts, the fiancé must-dos, and the how-to-catch-a-murder talk, I've got to get back to the cafe. Emily came in late, looking pale, saying she wasn't feeling good. The last thing I need is a sick girl ruining my best latte recipes," Lucy grunted, shoving the last of her sandwich in her mouth.
